Back to 1978, the Porsche 935/78 was the final version of the Porsche 935 and it was specifically built for Le Mans. In order to make this possible, the Porsche’s Chief Racing team made a variety of changes like the redesigned front and rear end, and the enhanced 845-bhp Type 935/71 Boxer-6 engine with water-cooled cylinder heads featuring four valves per cylinder. The car can hit 60mph from zero in 2.6sec, and a max speed of 227mph. Driven by the duo Jochen Mass and Jackie Ickx, the Porsche 935/78 won big time in Silverstone Circuit. Then in 1978 24 Hours of Le Mans, Rolf Stommelen and Manfred Schurti managed to finish 8th overall despite the 935/78’s engine problem. But that was the story of the past, how about this new 2019 Porsche 935?

First off, we can sense a huge throwback to the original Porsche 935/78 judging by the 2019 Porsche 935’s exterior styling. It features carbon-fibre bodywork which reduces the total weight down to 3,042lbs (or 1,379kg). Since this car based on the 935/78, the new 935 is also longer than the usual 911. To add more nostalgic element, it includes wheels featuring aerodynamic “turbofans” which was used on Porsche race cars back in the 70s-80s. And of course, we have to mention the classic Martini right on the front hood. To certain extent, the modern 935 seems to not only bring back the memory of the “Moby Dick”, but also to honor other classics like the 911 RSR or the 911 GT3 R.

Getting inside the 935, there are quite lots of new stuffs too, notably the Cosworth digital dashboard and driver-selectable ABS settings. For the steering wheel, it borrows the button-covered carbon-fibre one from the 2019 911 GT3 R. In addition, it also includes air conditioning, safety roll cage, and a single racing bucket seat along with a six-point safety harness. And if the customers desire, they can also choose to have an extra passenger seat.

2019 Porsche 935 is a new model for present day, which means it also gets a new engine. It gets the 3.8-litre flat-six engine with 7-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox, which based on the 911 GT2 RS. It can cranks up 700hp, and the sound… oh boy it is fantastic thanks to the 908-inspired exposed titanium exhaust tips:

Unfortunately, only 77 units of this special 2019 Porsche 935 “Moby Dick” will be built, each capped at the price tag of €700,000 (or $814,000 at the current exchange rates). Quite expensive, but for such an awesome reborn of a race car, it should be worth it.
