The Aston Martin DBS Superleggera was revealed last year as Aston Martin’s super-GT flagship and also, a replacement to the Vanquish. It is also dedication to the “DBS” namesake, which reminds us of George Lazenby’s James Bond in 1969 On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, and Daniel Craig’s 007 in 2006 Casino Royale.

The word “Superleggera” refers to its “lightweight” aspect. Also, the car actually based on the DB11, featuring the same 5.2-litre twin-turbo V-12 engine while at the same time, keeping its weight 70kg lighter than the V-12 DB11. And due the DBS Superleggera being a Vanquish’s replacement and also, bearer of the DBS’s namesake, clearly there are quite lots of expectations put on this car.

That said, Aston Martin’s boss – Andy Palmer – enthusiastically described it as “a brute in a suit. So with no further ado, let’s see how incredible this new Aston Martin super-GT is!

2. Exterior

Right at the beginning, we can feel the impressiveness from the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera’s exterior. It undoubtedly looks “Aston Martin”: it is elegant while at the same time, it feels aggressive and sporty. Compared it to the DB11, there are also quite a number noteworthy differences, for example: Its front features a huge gaping grill to let the air come in for maximum cooler. In addition, the front bonnet has two openings which allow the air the come out. And on the sides there are side louvers (which can also be seen on the DB11) for air-swelling reduction.

In terms of overall weight, the DBS Superleggera is not exactly that “lightweight” with approx. 1800kg in total (or 4100lbs). Still, it is already about 70kg lighter than the DB11 (which weighs around 1900kg or 4200lbs). On the other hand, the car is also wider: approx. 10mm wider on the front and 20mm wider at the rear to be more specific. Finally, it provides a really good amount of storage space which seems to be able to carry a fair share of luggage.

3. Interior

Getting inside the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera, we can sense the same luxury sensation from its interior design and material, just like what we expect from Aston Martin. That being said, the DBS Superleggera’s interior is actually pretty much similar to the DB11. And although this may seem to be disappointing for some people, fortunately its comfort is still very spot-on. The seats are trimmed with alcantara and they are both firm and extremely comfortable. Seats also can be electronically adjusted while driver can still have good reach and control.

And talking about driver, from driver seat we have the front dashboard featuring a center rev counter (which changes its display depending on the driving modes), the driving information on the left including fuel or damper, and the assistance information on the right (which shows different things like Trip, Radio, Navi, etc… depending on driver’s setting). Then we have a really nice steering wheel as well as the shift-paddle which has a great feel to it.

The biggest gripe with the DBS Leggera’s interior is the Mercedes infotainment system which is rather outdated to this day’s standard. Its design and control is really lackluster and it does not even include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

There is also 4-seats configuration; however, the back seats are only suitable for young children and probably for storing some of the luggage at best.

3. Power & Performance

  • Engine: 5.2-litre twin-turbo V-12
  • Power: 715hp @ 6500rpm
  • Torque: 663lb-ft @ 1800rpm
  • Top Speed: 211mph
  • 0-60mph Acceleration: 3.2 sec
  • 0-100mph Acceleration: 7.3 sec

As mentioned, Aston Martin DBS Superleggera shares the same 5.2-litre twin-turbo V-12 engine from the DB11, now featuring 715 horsepower and 663lb-ft of torque, along with the ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox. Despite the different engine compared to the Vanquish and Vanquish S’ naturally-aspirated, the sound of this car is incredibly phenomenal with all the crackles and burbles. And while such roaring sound may feel intimidating, the DBS Superleggera turns out to be pretty approachable.

For starters, we just simply push the D button (which is for Drive), then the handbrake auto releases, and we’re good to go. In Comfort mode, its acceleration, braking, and steering are already nice and they get along pretty well. Its response really well with good precision and calmness, making it feel splendid when driving around town.

After getting used to the car with Comfort mode, it’s time to hit the Sport and Sport+ mode, which is where the DBS Superleggera’s performance really shines. Acceleration feels incredible powerful and quick, it feels so satisfying especially with all that tremendous sound. Steering still remains really good and responsive, making it really fun to drive. Especially in Sport mode, it gets the balance right between the high power and the elegance. Its performance really feels elegant, enjoyable, and natural, as if we can simply get in the car and have fun right away. It literally feels like “a brute in a suit”, just as Andy Palmer claimed.
