When we talk about the grand tourer, we talk about famous names like Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Dodge. And of course, we cannot just forget Bentley, especially the Bentley Continental GT series. Bentley Continental GT has come quite a long way since 2003 with 2 generations. But still, even such a great series needs change along with the flow of the automotive industry. And so, Bentley has decided to introduce the third generation of Bentley Continental GT with the latest descendent: Bentley Continental GT 2018. So, can this new Bentley Continental inherit the magic of previous generations? Let’s find out!
When the first Bentley Continental GT 2003 released, it opened up a whole new area in this rich automotive industry: the luxurious grand tourer. But of course, opening up a new area means opening up a new competitive market with many heavy competitors for Bentley. As the results, Bentley has been trying to make the Bentley Continental as the benchmark for many other grand tourers. Such mission has pushed Bentley far and wide. In the recent Frankfurt Motor Show, Bentley once again proved to be the pioneer of grand tourers with the latest Bentley Continental GT 2018.
The new Continental GT 2018 is not a half-baked descendent of previous Bentley Continental predecessors, it has opened up a new era of the third Bentley Continental generation. And as CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer said: “Today we introduce a car that is the ultimate in extraordinary design, technology and innovation.” How exactly extraordinary it is? There is only one way to find out!
Bentley Continental GT 2018 is a collaborated creation with Porsche, and right on the outside, we can see the inspirations from Porsche Panamera and the Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 concept car. The results of such inspirations? Incredible! Absolutely incredible! Of course the car does not have appealing traits of a supercar, but it has the striking characteristics of its own.
For the body, the Continental GT 2018 gets a combined material, primarily aluminium and steel, covered in more aluminium. By using the Super Formed technique, the new aluminium was heated under 500 degrees Celsius (or 932 Fahrenheit). Thanks to it, the team of Crewe is able to come up with more delicate design. It also lowers the Bentley’s weight about 80kg (or 176.3 pounds); however, the car is still indeed a heavy one with 2250kg.
Coming alongside with the new material is the revised build. Bentley Continental GT 2018 seems to be lower, more delicate, and still has that muscular look. This is all thanks to the lower hood and nose design, and especially the forward-mounted front wheels. In addition to these changes, the overall design is also revamped; making the car’s front definitely feels impressive, especially with the perfect crystal-cut front lights. The Continental GT 2018’s back probably has the most significant redesign, typically the taillights’ form is designed similar to the exhaust pipes’ and it also sticks to the trunk’s lid. Overall, it is suffice to say that this new Continental GT is like an aluminium masterpiece.
Like the previous Bentleys, stepping inside the Continental GT 2018 also feels like stepping inside the world of luxury. What we see are the elegantly wood veneers, along with the excellent leather craft. And to give the interior more “epic-ness”, the design team utilized the metal finish technique from the most revered watches from Swiss – Côtes de Genève.
Besides the delicate design elements above, we have to mention the “tricky” Bentley Rotating Display. When we first get inside the interior, everything looks kind of “normal” until we start the engine. Upon the engine activation, a 12.3-inch “blank plate” will flip and reveal an infotainment touchscreen. The touchscreen features 3 panels showing necessary information with full-customizable options. Other quality-of-life techs like Apple CarPlay, real time traffic, and Private eCall are also featured.
Now we come to the important section which we all are waiting for. In terms of engine, the not-so-good news is that Bentley Continental GT 2018 still uses the 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged W-12. However, this W-12 engine comes with many refinements like the active engine mounts, twin-injection, twin-scroll turbos, and the variable displacement. The engine is also moved back and it sits lower which give better central gravity. As the results, we have a powerful Continental GT with 626 horsepower and the whopping top speed of 207 mph. From 0 to 60 mph, the car can accelerate within 3.6 sec which is about 0.7 sec faster than the previous Continental GT 2017.
- Engine: 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged W-12
- Power: 626 horsepower
- Torque: 664 lb·ft
- Top Speed: 207 mph
- Acceleration 0-60 mph: 3.6 sec
Besides the revamped 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged W-12 engine, the new Bentley Continental GT 2018 includes 8-speed dual clutch gearbox and fully computer controlled suspension. Especially we have the dual clutch transmission offers satisfying gearshifts and acceleration. Despite being a heavy car with 2250kg, the Continental GT 2018’s control still feels outstanding with its incredible accuracy and agility.
The highlight here is the Dynamic Ride System along with 48V Active Roll Control. These applications further enhance the car’s response and handling in every condition. Furthermore, they have enhancements for the shock damping, anti-roll-bar, and the spring rates. Coming along with the system is the triple-chambered air suspension which can be experienced via 4 modes: Sport, Comfort, Custom, and Bentley. While the Sport mode feels quite aggressive, the Comfort provides more gentle experience while the Custom mode allows personal customizations. The last Bentley mode is the balance between Comfort and Sport mode, and it seems it is the Crewe’s driving mode of choice.
Overall, Bentley Continental GT 2018 has proven itself to be the worthy successor the name of Continental GT. The car marks a new return with exotic and true-to-Bentley design. While the exterior clearly takes inspirations from Porsche Panamera and the Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6, the Continental GT 2018 still feels incredibly unique and delicate. Of course, the Continental GT 2018 is not an all-out sports car; it offers an incredible riding experience we cannot simply ignore.
