Avengers Infinity War has finally hit the theatres and it is taking the world by storm! After the 10-year journey and everything is pushed to the limit. Not only this is the biggest Marvel movie to date, it is also the most ambitious by gathering all the famous heroes of Marvel Universe and the most hyped villain of all – Thanos. Will the Mad Titan wreck every bit of our expectations? It is time to find out!
To this point we have already known that Avengers Infinity War takes place after all the Marvel movies so far. Thanos – the Mad Titan finally makes his appearance and this time he wants to gather all the 5 Infinity Stones. And if he succeeds, at least half of the Universe will be wiped. Facing such an imminent danger, the Avengers have to rally again, along with many, many other Marvel heroes to stop this insane Titan. But how can they stop him? What chance do they have against one of the most powerful beings in the Universe? Not to mention, judging from the trailers, we already saw Thanos possesses the Infinity Gauntlet along with Reality Stone and Space Stone. Thanks to such set up, we cannot help but to feel extremely hyped and curious about what will happen in this significant mark of a 10-year journey.
Of course Thanos – the Dark Titan (played by Josh Brolin) himself is a must-have in this movie. Right in the trailers, we can already feel the tension of this overpowered character. In the original comics, he was the last son of A’lar on planet Titan. Since he was young he was known as a genius, especially in engineering and technology field. Due to the Deviant Syndrome, he had an abnormally huge body with purple skin. Thanos was once not the mad man, but gradually his evil and murderous nature started to show until one day he became a grown Titan commanding a destructive space crew.
As a Titan, Thanos already possesses tremendous physical and intellect capability. He is already a crazy monster by himself, and with the Infinity Gauntlet and Infinity Stones, he is no doubt an extremely dangerous being to most of the Universe.
Since this is an “Avengers” movie, surely the famous team of Earth heroes – The Avengers must make their appearance in the film. As usual, we have:
- Tony Stark / Iron Man: Our famous playboy, billionaire, inventor, and hero in metal armor played by Robert Downey Jr. always come top on the Marvel heroes list of many fans. Tony Stark is a genius who has invented tons of badass armors like the Hulkbuster. Maybe he will invent something like… Thanos-buster?
- Steve Rogers / Captain America: Captain America played by Chris Evan plays a vital role in The Avengers since he was the first Avenger and also the leader of the team. With his superhuman capability and the well-known Vibranium shield, our captain will ready to protect every one he holds dear. And also, who can just ignore that awesome beard of his in Avengers Infinity War?
- Thor: Chris Hemsworth’s Thor finally returned after the conflict back in Thor Ragnarok. He has a new eyepatch now and we have to say… he looks badass. As the God of Thunder of Asgard (literally, he does not need Mjolnir to do that anymore), will Thor defeat Thanos? (Eh… maybe not)
- Bruce Banner / Hulk (played by Mark Ruffalo): If there is a fierce battle, our monstrous green-skinned gladiator will not miss it especially this epic fight with Thanos. The only question left is: Who is stronger fighter? Hulk or Thanos?
- Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow: After the event of Captain America Civil War, there is something changed about Romanoff (played by Scarlett Johansson). Still, she is one of the greatest spies in S.H.I.E.L.D and also the founding member of the Avengers. She may not be the most hopeful member, but she will do whatever needed to save the day.
Guardians of the Galaxy
Although the Guardians of the Galaxy does not relate to the Avengers whatsoever, such a threat of galactic level like Thanos should not be ignored. Again, we will get to see the full team, including:
- Peter Quill / Star-Lord by Chris Pratt
- Gamora by Zoe Saldana
- Drax the Destroyer by Dave Bautista
- Rocket Raccoon by Bradley Cooper
- Groot by Vin Diesel
- Mantis by Pom Klementieff
Aside from other members, Gamora has a direct relation with Thanos since she was once Thanos’s adopted daughter along with Nebula (played by Karen Gillan). Surely Gamora will not miss this opportunity to repay her father’s kind treatments after all these times. That also means we will get to see Nebula soon enough.
Dr. Stephen Strange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) is the most powerful sorcerer in the world and current the Time Stone is in his possession. Obviously Doctor Strange is one of the most wanted man by Thanos “thanks” to the Time Stone. The stone itself is a powerful artifact which can allow full control over time. However, will it be enough to stop Thanos who already possessed Power Stone and Space Stone?
Back The Avengers Age of Ultron, Vision (played by Paul Bettany) was first introduced as an artificial body created by Ultron using artificial organic tissue with vibranium. Ultron’s original plan was to use the Mind Stone from Loki’s scepter to upload his mind into this new body. However, this plan was interrupted by The Avengers. Later on, the team decided to upload J.A.R.V.I.S. A.I. into the body along with the Mind Stone, giving it life and identity as Vision. With the newfound life, Vision helped the Avengers in stopping Ultron and proved himself to be a valuable ally. Again, Vision will surely be another prominent target of Thanos due to the Mind Stone in his possession.
Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston) is known as the God of Mischief and he was once the villain back in the first The Avengers movie. After what happened in Thor Ragnarok, Loki redeemed himself to be a good. Thanks to his effort, the Tesseract was recovered. But judging from the trailers, it seems Loki and Thor failed to prevent Thanos from claiming it.
T’Challa / Black Panther
The King of Wakanda – T’Challa (played by Chadwick Boseman) has just got his own movie and it is truly a great Marvel movie. As the king of a country, T’Challa has responsibility to protect his people. And when there is a worldwide threat like Thanos, T’Challa will surely join the fight. Guess it is time to put that huge Vibranium deposit into work eh?
Of course there are more characters in this movie (about at least 40), but here we list the most important figure only. And with that out of our way, it’s time to see if Avengers Infinity War is an excellent Marvel movie!
Overall, the sound and travel in Avengers Infinity War feel epic as usual. Just like most of other Marvel movies, Avengers Infinity War will fill us to the brim with tons, tons of CGI and incredible effects. Given the size of this movie, it feels amazing when the studio managed to pull out these visual elements successfully. Due to the scale of the movie, Infinity War features lots of different locations since our heroes are divided into smaller squads for different purpose. Then finally, all heroes gather in one place to face the final battle with Thanos himself. Everything is presented nicely and they do serve their own purpose.
Characters design looks as iconic as always. And this time we have to mention the “new villain” Thanos who looks extremely impressive. Thanos looks menacing and dangerous. Thanos does feel dangerous, like he can kill anyone if he wants to and he can affect the world tremendously depending on how he likes. Of course, Thanos’s visual is not everything, but for those who have watched the movie, you will see that Thanos is indeed a great Marvel villain (which we will talk about later). And such great villain only makes Thanos’s appearance even more impressive and truly menacing.
But that’s only the “appearance”; the question is: how good is the movie exactly?
In summary: The story of Avengers Infinity War takes place after all the Marvel movies we have seen so far (since it is the current 10 year conclusion of the MCU Phase 3). Thanos has finally appeared and he is attempting to gather all the Infinity Stones with the ultimate purpose to erase half of the Universe. Facing such a catastrophic event, the Avengers along with other famous heroes like Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and the Guardians of the Galaxy have to stick together to prevent Thanos from claiming all the Stones.
So… erasing half of the Universe? That is insane isn’t it? And interesting enough, this goal is not a mere threatening quote from a mere half-baked villain. Throughout the movie we, the viewers, can truly feel this danger is coming nigh. We do feel afraid that Thanos may be able to pull his plan off, and this is absolutely a good thing especially in superheroes movie where typical trope “good guys beat bad guys” tends to happen.
To be honest, we do not think Avengers Infinity War’s plot is an innovative one. It still has certain cliché elements; however, the overall plot still works quite well for the characters to shine. Every character has his/her own moment and all characters have their times shared equally. Then we have Thanos – the biggest baddie of Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. He successfully creates a tension throughout the movie, like his threat is real; it can be real and as dangerous as his claim. This movie has serious tone to it. It does have certain comedic moments depending on the superheroes team we’re watching. Still, both serious and comedic elements are nicely balanced here and therefore, those comedic parts do not feel cheesy or out of the place.
Now, we have to talk a bit about the ending. In all seriousness, we are extremely surprised to see the filmmaker team is actually bold enough to put in a “tragic ending”. We would like not to talk about it in details but those who already watched the movie probably know what we meant. The only thing we can add is that: If you think this is a typical superhero movie in which “good guys beat bad guys”, no it’s not, it is more mature than we thought and it will be tragic. And talking about the ending, we honestly do not know what will happen next. Everything can happen in the next Avengers movie and they can decide whatever the development will come next. Again, it is a good thing for a superheroes film like Avengers Infinity War. It breaks the stereotypical plot we often think of from a movie about heroes and villains.
That said though, some people may argue that the story’s result is not that 100% definitive due to the roadmap they already planned for future MCU movies. To that we agree, but, we still can’t sure what will really happen next given the current roadmap.
As mentioned, while the overall plot of Avengers Infinity War is not something spectacular, it does a good job in creating a world for characters to work on. Every character has their own time to shine, which is welcoming given the size of the roster (more than 40 characters). They fit the story nicely and do not feel like acting out of character. Tony Stark is still our playboy, billionaire, inventor and his relationship with our Spidey is worth noticing. Captain America is still our Captain, except that he has the sweet beard. T’Challa the Black Panther is still our respectful king of Wakanda (especially when we see him commanding an army). Peter Quill the Star-Lord is still the loveable, yet irritable and emotionally-driven guys at the same time (although people may hate him for “certain reason”).
Once again Thanos is our star here. Arguably he is among the best Marvel villains to date alongside with Erik Killmonger in Black Panther movie. Thanos in Avengers Infinity War is surprisingly not an one-note character. He is not simply a genocidal maniac who wants to kill half of the Universe. He has a good reason behind this brutal goal. Furthermore, the movie surprisingly explores more sides of Thanos, making him much more compelling villain than what we initially thought. Finally the best thing we want to say about Thanos is his “real dangerous nature”. As we said, Thanos does act, he actually kills people and this is extremely shocking for us and many others. Of course we don’t know for sure whether killed characters will get “revived” or not. But for now the fact is undeniable: Thanos killed people. He does not jest like many other cliché villains. When he does something, he does it seriously.
This creates a real tension throughout the movie. We as viewers can feel the tension here judging from the situation and the expressions of all characters. The situation truly feels like: If the heroes mess up only 1 small mistake, they will lose, dramatically. Needless to say many, many superheroes movies have tried to create such an intense situation like this, but not all did succeed like Avengers Infinity War.
From our perspective, we believe Avengers Infinity War is arguably the best Marvel movie to date. For all what they have built throughout years, this is a worthy celebration for MCU’s 10-year journey. Although the overall plot is not something extraordinary, the characters especially the great villain Thanos does push the movie to a higher level. It is rare to see a superheroes movie be able to let the audiences feel the tension. And they finally do MCU and Thanos in particular a great justice.
If we rate Avengers Infinity War as a standalone movie, we would say it is a 7/10 since people will be confused without knowing what happened prior to this film. But considering this is a Marvel movie, a temporal conclusion of the past 10-year, we say this is an 8/10 movie. There are a lot of things to love and discuss here, especially when the movie’s ending has opened so much possibilities.
In all seriousness, we still can’t figure out what they will decide for the future MCU. Guess we will have to wait until Avengers 4 but for now, thank you and stay tune for more news in the future!
