With the huge succeed of Black Panther released on February 16, 2018; the world is waiting for the upcoming big shot: Avengers Infinity War in April 27. Avengers Infinity War marks a massive change for MCU Phase 3 and also, it takes inspiration from one of the most epic stories in the original Marvel Comics. Naturally, tons of people (including us) are extremely anticipating for this movie. And while waiting for this next epic movie, it will be a good idea to take a good look of what we may see. So with no further ado, these are things we should know about Avengers Infinity War!
*WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD*
According to what we know so far, Avengers Infinity War will include whole lots of characters from many titles like Iron Man, Captain America, Spiderman, Thor, and more… It will also include one of the most famous and dangerous villains in Marvel Comics: Thanos – The Mad Titan and more importantly, one of the most epic stories in Marvel Universe: The Infinity War. That said; the story of Avengers Infinity War may not follow exactly like what happened in the comic version. Rather, it may include the plots from these 2 big events in the original comics: The Infinity Gauntlet event and The Infinity War event.
This event is possibly the closest to what we have seen from the trailer. In the comics, The Infinity Gauntlet features a story when Thanos tried to impress Death (an Universal personification of death itself) for her love, including resurrecting Nebula to win Death’s affection. However, no matter how hard he did, Death was not interested. Ultimately, the Mad Titan came to think that if he would annihilate half of the Universe’s population, Death might have a second thought. And so with only a snap of his fingers, Thanos did what’s unimaginable.
To turn the tide of this nightmare, heroes of Earth, along with other cosmic entities decided to take down Thanos. But, taking down Thanos was not a simple child-play. Not only he was already a powerful being himself, he even possessed the Infinity Gauntlet embedded with all 6 Infinity Stones. Thanks to its tremendous power, Thanos defeated all who opposed him, including the heroes of Earth and even the most powerful beings in the Universe like Galactus, Master Order, and Lord Chaos.
Despite his grand achievements, eventually he failed due to the Infinity Gauntlet somehow was stolen from him by Nebula. In the end, Nebula lost the Infinity Gauntlet while the Earth’s heroes prevented Thanos from reclaiming the Gauntlet. Finally, the Infinity Gauntlet fell into the hand of Adam Warlock. That said; the Gauntlet was deactivated by the decree of Living Tribunal. As for Thanos, he chose to explode himself, yet only to find out that he decided to seclude himself to reflect his lessons of the past.
In this story, the plot seems to be a lot different from the upcoming movie with the similar name. In the Infinity War, an antagonist named Magus (who is the evil version of the original Adam Warlock) attempted to gain the absolute power over Marvel Universe. And to do this, he obtained the so-called “Cosmic Containment Units” (which had power similar to Cosmic Cube) and sent out an army of demonic doppelgangers of Earth’s heroes and villains. In order to fight against this new threat, Thanos decided to seek help from the Infinity Watch, an organization founded by the original Adam Warlock.
The doppelgangers caused huge chaotic situation on Earth, while the real heroes confronted Thanos and the Infinity Watch only to find out that they had the same goal. Later on, even Galactus joined force to fight against Magus. In order to defeat this dangerous enemy, Galactus tried to reactivate the Infinity Gauntlet. The Gauntlet was successfully reactivated; however, it was stole by Magus and Thanos’s doppelganger along with Adam Warlock.
In the final confrontation, all the heroes and villains fought against Magus. But eventually they were all fell under Magus’s power, except for Adam Warlock. By tricking Magus into using the fake Reality Gem, Adam had the upper hand and took control of the Infinity Gems from Magus. He imprisoned Magus into the world within Soul Gem. Afterwards, the Infinity Gauntlet was sealed once again under Living Tribunal’s degree.
Of course this story sounds really different from Avengers Infinity War. But who knows? We may get to see huge surprise when the film finally comes out.
Up to this point, many people will probably wonder what this Infinity Gauntlet is, especially if they are familiar with Marvel Comics or MCU. In short, Infinity Gauntlet is an all-powerful artifact designed by Thanos himself to hold all 6 Infinity Gems (or Soul Gems). Each of Infinity Gem possesses immense power at cosmic level which can manipulate a particular aspect of Marvel Universe. The 6 Infinity Gems include:
- Space Gem: This blue gem possesses the power of space. Its holder can teleport to anywhere in the Universe and even manipulate dimensions, wormholes, and more… This gem appeared in the following MCU movies: Thor (2011), Captain America the First Avenger (2011), and The Avengers (2012) as a cubic artifact named Tesseract.
- Reality Gem: This red gem holds the power of reality. It can bend the reality and change the fundamental laws of the world based on holder’s will. It also seems to be capable of granting holder’s wishes. This gem appeared in Thor The Dark World (2013) under the form of liquid-like Aether which can attach on the holder to make him stronger.
- Power Stone: This purple gem can grant the power of force which can control and unleash any form of force in the Universe. This gem appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) as Orb which can give holder immense physical strength.
- Mind Stone: This yellow gem gives the power of psionic power including telepathy and telekinesis. It appeared in The Avengers (2012), Captain America The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers Age of Ultron (2015), and Captain America Civil War (2016). The gem was first found within Loki’s scepter and later on, Vision’s forehead. So far, in MCU this gem is known to be capable of mind control.
- Time Stone: This green gem provides the power over time. Its holder can control all manner of time including time travel, time freezing, accelerating or slowing the time flow. It appeared in Doctor Strange (2016) as the Eye of Agamotto.
- Soul Stone: This orange gem can control all manner of souls, both the living and the dead. It can also evolve or devolve physical and mental traits of beings. We haven’t seen this gem in MCU yet but definitely we will get to see it in Avengers Infinity War.
And those are the 6 Infinity Gems in Marvel Universe. Basically if you possess an Infinity Gauntlet with all 6 gems, you will be a god… Well, sort of since you are still inferior to Living Tribunal and the One-Above-All. But that’s already enough to bring the world, no, the entire Universe to chaos.
In such cosmic-cataclysmic event like The Infinity Gauntlet and Infinity War (in Marvel Comics), no doubt there were tons of characters involved. Here are some of the prominent characters in both events who are likely to appear in this upcoming Avengers movie:
The Dark Titan will obviously make his appearance in this film since he is our main antagonist this time. In the original comic, Thanos was born as the last son of A’lar on Titan. Due to his Deviant Syndrome, he possessed a huge body with purple, hide-like skin. He was also a genius who excelled in all kinds of engineering and technologies. However, Thanos was also born with murderous instinct. His path eventually led him to a mad man, a god-like monster hunger for power and destruction.
In Avengers Infinity War, it seems we will see a Thanos (played by Josh Brolin) with similar background. This time, the Titan will have all the Infinity Gems within his grasp along with the Infinity Gauntlet. His prime goal in this movie is still unknown, but we can sure that his goal will lead to tons of deaths and destructions.
As mentioned in the first section, Adam Warlock played an important role in both Marvel Comics’ The Infinity Gauntlet and Infinity War event. He along with other Marvel heroes successfully retrieved the Infinity Gauntlet, preventing from Thanos and any other ill-intended characters to use the Gauntlet for evil purposes. Naturally, we expect such an important character in this upcoming Avengers Infinity War. In addition, if you have seen Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), you probably noticed the peculiar cocoon in the Collector’s Room. That was Adam Warlock‘s cocoon. According to his original story, he was an artificial human created to become Earth’s perfect human being named “Him“. After certain events, Adam hid in a regenerative cocoon and later on reborn as Adam Warlock we now know today.
In Marvel Universe, she is the personification of death itself and she governs the matter of death, decay, and destruction. Since Death is a fundamental force, she does not have any concrete form. That said; she can still take the physical forms and often appear as a human or skeleton. Death has special relationship with Thanos. It was her who assumed the form of a girl and met Thanos since he was young. Death often encouraged Thanos to fully embrace his true killing nature and soon, he gradually accepted it himself. As they accompanied each other, Thanos eventually felt in love with Death and tried numerous times to impress her. He even destroyed countless planets and worlds just to make Death notice him but all those efforts were for naught.
In terms of power, Death is considered to be a nigh-omnipotent being with nigh-omnipotent power. As personification of death, she can control everything related to death and souls. She can never die since she is an universal law, not a living being. Also, it is theorized that Death can manipulate reality, time, space, matter, energy, or magic. But it is unlikely for her to abuse this power since it can easily disturb the balance of Universe, which highly endangers her own well-being.
Although Death played a significant role in Thanos’s background and The Infinity Gauntlet event, we still can’t sure whether she will appear in Avengers Infinity War or not.
Silver Surfer rarely appears in MCU, but in Marvel Comics, he played an important role in The Infinity Gauntlet, typically sensing the imminent danger of Thanos and siding with other characters in stopping him.
Originally, Silver Surfer was born Norrin Radd on an advanced planet of Zenn-La. The land of Zenn-La was once a utopia without any sort of poverty, crime, disease, or hunger. However, their prosperity did not last long when Galactus – The Worlds Devourer set his eyes on the planet. To convince Galactus not to consume his home-planet, Radd offered to become his herald and find new planets for Galactus to devour. Agreed on Radd’s term, Galactus transformed him into a silver-skinned being with cosmic power called as Silver Surfer. He served Galactus for nearly 100 years, travelling throughout Universe to look for energy-rich planets without any sentient life-forms for Galactus. But, Galactus gradually altered his mind, making him finding inhabited planets. Fortunately for him, eventually Silver Surfer escaped Galactus’s grasp, becoming a “free man” although he still helped Galactus in some occasions.
Silver Surfer’s appearance in The Infinity Gauntlet event is quite prominent. However, we are still not sure whether he will appear in Avengers Infinity War.
Many people will probably see this name familiar. In fact, he is an extra-dimensional demon with an unknown origin. Mephisto rules over his own “Hell” dimension which is totally unrelated to any concept of Hell on Earth. However, he gains power through Earth people’s belief in ultimate evil being. Therefore, he called his realm as “Hell” and he let people calls him in many names like Mephistopheles or Satan, which only further increases people’s belief in evil and darkness.
Although Mephisto does not seem to have much appearance in The Infinity Gauntlet event, he was actually the one who suggested Thanos in killing half of Universe’s population to please Death. So to some extent, we can expect to see Mephisto in the upcoming Infinity War movie. But even so, there is high chance that he won’t be a prominent character in the film.
Drax the Destroyer
Those who watched Guardians of the Galaxy probably remember this wild guy. Before becoming the man as he is now, Drax was originally a mortal named Arthur Douglas. He had a wife named Yvette and they had a daughter named Heather. Unfortunately for the family, when they drove across Mojave Desert, they encountered a spaceship carrying Thanos. Because Thanos’s plan to survey Earth without being detected, he ordered to kill the family. For some miracles, Heather were actually still alive and saved by Thanos’s father – A’lar (or Mentor), while A’lar had another plan for Arthur’s soul. With help from the father Kronos, A’lar created a powerful humanoid body from Earth and give Arthur’s soul to it. Thus, the new being called Drax the Destroyer was born with the main purpose of hunting down Thanos.
In The Infinity Gauntlet event, Drax also joined in the battle against Thanos. However, he was defeated. Since his story was so tied to Thanos, it is no wonder if he makes appearance in the movie.
In MCU, Nebula’s story is quite different than her original comics. In her movie story, Nebula was an adopted daughter of Thanos, as well as Gamora. Back in Guardians of the Galaxy, Nebula aimed to kill her sister Gamora. But in the end, she decided to forgive her sister and eventually set on to kill her father Thanos.
In The Infinity Gauntlet event, Nebula played vital role in “defeating” Thanos as she successfully stole the Infinity Gauntlet. Although Nebula could not control the Gauntlet properly, she still received immense power. At the end of the storyline, Adam Warlock succeeded in reclaiming the Gauntlet from her while the Avengers prevented Thanos from re-taking it.
Judging by the MCU plotline so far, we can sure Nebula will make her appearance in Avengers Infinity War. But, we don’t expect the story will be exactly the same like in the original comics.
And that’s it folks! What do you think about Avengers Infinity War? Feel free to share with us and for now, thank you and stay tune for more news in the future!
